Why Shopify bundles oversell, and how to check them
Updated 2026-10-10 · by Hieu Tran, written with AI agents and checked against the sources below
A bundle can only be sold as many times as its scarcest component allows. When a bundle shows stock that its components don't have, you oversell. It usually happens after a component sells out on its own, a variant is deleted or renamed, or a bundle app and Shopify disagree.

The rule
Sellable bundles = the minimum, over its components, of (component stock ÷ quantity of that component in the bundle). If a gift set holds 2 mugs and 1 tray, with 9 mugs and 20 trays in stock, you can sell 4 sets.
Audit it by hand
Export products (Products → Export, CSV) to get variant SKUs and inventory quantities.
List each bundle with its component SKUs and quantities (from your bundle app's settings or export).
For each bundle, compute the sellable quantity with the rule above.
Compare with the stock the bundle shows in your store. Any bundle showing more than it can sell will oversell.
Flag bundles whose component SKU no longer exists or was renamed: they often show stock by default.
Common causes
A component also sells on its own and the bundle's stock isn't recalculated.
A variant was deleted or its SKU changed, breaking the link.
Two apps manage the same bundle, or the bundle has its own fixed stock.
Inventory is tracked per location and the bundle uses a different location than its components.
